After the abrupt and unexpected exit of Rick Grimes, the Arizona Cardinals had a huge hole to fill with mere weeks until the beginning of the 2018 XCFL season. In a move that has the XCFL world buzzing, the Cardinals announced today that their former Super Bowl and Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner would be trading in his microphone at XCFL Network for a clipboard.
Warner, who has always expressed an interest in coaching, commented that the timing was just right for the taking: “This situation albeit unorthodox, just feels right” Warner said at his first press conference Tuesday morning. “I’m excited to get to work and bring Arizona fans what I was unable to in 2009, and that’s a championship”
In 2009, Warner and the Cardinals were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers in an intense fourth quarter in Super Bowl XLIII. Warner, admitted that the loss still bugs him. “As a competitor, you feel that hole in your gut, and it’s only intensified by the fact you were so close to filling it. I wasn’t able to get it done as a player, but I will make darn sure we do everything we can as a staff to accomplish it as a coach!”
Warner will be rejoining his partner Larry Fitzgerald this season, making for an interesting dynamic. “I’m very excited to work with Larry again. We’ve remained friends all these years, and he was the first call I made when I agreed to come coach. He’s excited, his teammates are excited, and we’re all ready to get to work.”
Fitzgerald was Warner’s go to target during his stay in Arizona. Fitzgerald, now in the waning years of his successful career is looking to go out on top with some hardware. Can Warner bring that title to Arizona as he alluded to?
