Defense 4 INTs
To offset the fumble party the offense was having they defense stepped up in a big way with 4 interceptions. The first, pictured above, was a 1v1 jump ball in the endzone in which Amos fought the ball away from “the” Berry Brooks. Other ints were made by Griffin on a ball tipped to him by Amos, Eddie Jackson made a huge int in the endzone again to avoid going down 2 scores. Roquan Smith made a leaping grab in the middle of the field late in the 4th quarter also. The defense did much better today than week 16 and we needed every bit of it.
Lambert and Carstens Carry the Offense
In the year of the Goss, it was a 3rd year WR and 2nd Year TE that made the big conversions and big catches when it counted. Lambert won a 50/50 ball with Derwin James for 52 yards early in the game on 3rd and long and he added some timely catches to lead the team in receiving. Carstens was a security blanket and was able to win some battles vs the Packers LB, the biggest of which was a 3rd and long late in the game with a rookie 3rd strong QB delivering the TD strike to take the lead. Next week these 2 will be counted on again for some crucial plays.
Wentz Broken Collarbone
Wentz has been a Bear now for 2 seasons and missed all of the end of last season and now is done for the remainder of this season. The backup looks to be the rookie Finney a late 5th round pick. The leash will be short but in limited playtime in this very important game. HC Parker Elliott stated “ we have 2 backups that are very similar to each other, we will go with the hot hand and both QBs understand that.” Szalay was a 2nd round pick in P-E first draft and is no stranger to jumping in at a moments notice.
